Spotify first hit the 400 million mark in the fourth quarter of 2021 after adding a whopping 25 million users. A deal with Universal Music Group means that next album from Katy Perry or Kendrick Lamar could debut on Spotify Premium two weeks before the ad-supported. During the quarter, the company added 6 million net paying subscribers, slightly larger than the 4 million users on the free tier. The same report also highlights that the number of ad-supported users on the platform stood at 256 million. A common way to save money on digital subscriptions is using free resources as much as possible. That's less than half the total, but it's not surprising since not everyone can afford to add yet another subscription to their monthly expenses in the current age of ballooning subscriptions. Of the 433 million users, only 188 million have a Spotify subscription. However, not every user is a paying subscriber since, unlike Apple Music, Spotify has a free, ad-supported tier.
